Over the years, I have heard horror stories about terrible motorcycle crashes because of a blown tire or a brake or suspension malfunction. Fortunately, this has never happened to anybody that I know.

My wife Sherry rides what a lot of biker women are riding these days, a Harley Sportster 883 Low and I ride a Honda VTX1300R. Sherry didn’t like the feel of the center controls so we had forward control’s put on her Harley. She loved the way her bike rode after we added the forward controls.

All was good, so one warm Sunday morning we decided to go for a bike ride in the country. It was a beautiful day and the ride was wonderful. We took the back roads for about 90 miles or so and then decided to head back home for dinner.

The shortest way home was to take the highway.

As we turned down the onramp towards home it was a good thing I looked in my mirror because Sherry was stopped buy the side of the highway onramp flashing her high beams like there was no tomorrow.

I stopped, parked my Honda, and walked back to her to see what had happend .

As it turned out, the linkage that connects the foot shifter, to the transfer case had fallen off and Sherry had no way of shifting gears.

This was a serious problem. We were ninety miles in the middle of nowhere, we didn’t want to leave a brand new sportster sitting on the side of the road and I could not leave Sherry there alone sitting on her Harley while I went to try and find linkage. Although that would have been impossible because it was Sunday and none of the bike shops are open on Sunday where we live.

Not all was lost though. I asked Sherry if she remembered the last time she had changed gears . She told me she had changed gears just before we turned onto the on onramp of the highway . So , I went on a quest up the ramp to see if I could locate the linkage and the two bolts that held the linkage in place.

“Wonderful!” About half way up the onramp , I found the linkage. I was almost home. I still needed to find the two bolts that connected the linkage on to the motorbike so Sherry could shift and we could continue our ride home.

I went up one side of the highway onramp and down the other looking for the ever so elusive linkage bolts. Frustration was setting in, as I searched again for those bolts.

It didn’t help matters that two half drunk rednecks in an old 1982 faded red colored flat bed truck had stopped by Sherry and started to harass her. I think they thought better of it when Sherry told them to go do something with themselves that I am sure neither one of them had done with a women for a long time and they saw me walking up the ramp scowling. They drove off gesturing, I guess they though that we were number one or something.

Back to the problem at hand, I had the linkage but no bolts to attach it. I had my motorcycle, however, it is a metric bike and Sherry’s Harley Davidson is good old American standard.

If you know anything about metric and standard bolts, they do not fit. The threads will not match up. Anyway , that didn’t stop me. I found out that the seat bolts on my Honda are just about the same size as the bolts that hold the shifter linkage for the forward controls on a sportster. The difference is the thread pattern is a different . They did fit just enough though; I just didn’t tighten them in.

After my fix up , it did not take long and we were back on the road heading home.

I guess the reason for this story is not to take doing a pre ride check for granted.

You would have thought that getting work done on your new motorcycle by a certified Harley dealer would insure that the work would be done right. Well as it turned out, the mechanic that switched the controls on Sherry’s bike didn’t put lock tight on the linkage bolts and after a few months of riding the bolts came out.

Could the problem have been eliminated if the mechanic had installed the linkage the right way? Of course , it could have. Although , it could have also been eliminated if I had taken just a few extra minutes and done a pre ride check.

We were fortunate that it was just a linkage that failed and not something that could have caused injury or death.

The Toy Runs
The Christmas first toy run started with a police call when a struggling family had been robbed of everything in their house. When the officer arrived he noticed the family did not have any food or Christmas toys for their children. He then put in a call to his police motorcycle club and they went shopping for the family.

After ten years this POFF Christmas tradition has now grown to include a small fleet of police and firemen, church members and Christian motorcycle clubs that pack their saddle bags with toys , food and plenty of Christmas cheer and ride to the neighborhoods that need it the most.

POFF’s, “ Saint Nick Squadron” is always looking for extra volunteers to join in on the “Christmas parade” , so if you have a motorcycle, please contact Woody and join us for the ultimate Christmas adventure!

This is an amazing event to benefit the foster children of Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services offices (DCFS).

ToyRide supports over 1000 children in the five Southern California counties, with over 600 from the Los Angeles area alone. ToyRide? is working with Los Angeles County DCFS and with multiple DCFS district offices within Los Angeles County to provide Christmas presents for the foster children.

As in years past ToyRide? has made sure that each child assigned to ToyRide? by the Los Angeles DCFS office received the gift they asked for. This year we have stepped it up and ToyRide? will be providing each child with two items off their wish list. This is a daunting task for our team to make sure that each child gets exactly what they are asking for.

This year ToyRide? has teamed up with Target, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us to help us reach our goal. We receive discounts at each of these stores to help us provide for more children. Cash donations and gift cards are accepted in Lieu of a toy. These donations will be used by the ToyRide? staff to purchase toys specific to each foster child’s request. If you are short on time, worried about carrying a toy on your bike or not sure what to get, cash or a gift card to one of these three locations would be greatly appreciated and quite helpful in allowing us to reach our goal of giving two requested gifts to each child. For the past five years Angel’s Stadium in Anaheim, Ca has been our host venue for our huge motorcycle event. This event is possible because of the generous support from our sponsors and the participants. The ride begins at Angel’s Stadium, and is the only motorcycle charity toy run where streets are closed and the riders are given a police escort. The event ends at SuperBike Nation in the City of Orange where the riders mingle with vendors and are treated to a stunt bike show.

I am not sure about you but when I get up in the morning to find gas prices have risen again, it just drives me nuts.
